Historic Structure Fund & Historic Thatched Buildings Stream 2025

The Historic Structures Fund (HSF) seeks to assist the conservation and enhancement of protected structures and buildings. This scheme works to safeguard structures or parts of structures in immediate danger of significant deterioration for the benefit of communities and the public.

For 2025, The Historic Structures Fund will offer grants from €50,000 up to €200,000 only, and focus on larger enhancement, refurbishment or reuse projects involving heritage structures, where:

  • a clear community or public benefit has been demonstrated or
  • a clear residential benefit has been demonstrated (such projects must be advanced through the planning process as necessary)

Applicants are required to provide 50% of the total project cost, in exceptional circumstances a higher percentage may be sought with a 80% max of a grant. It is a requirement of the Historic Structures Fund that the applicant engages an appropriately qualified conservation professional to oversee the work. While Offaly County Council facilitates the initial applications, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage operates the fund and determines the final list of nationwide projects to be granted funding.

The Historic Thatched Buildings Stream (HTBS) seeks to protect the conservation and heritage value of historic thatched roof buildings including dwellings and other structures.  

New for 2025, the Historic Thatched Buildings Stream (HTBS) with an allocation for Offaly of €15,450.49. Applicants are required to provide a minimum of 20% of total costs. The owner or occupier of a thatched structure built before 1970, including domestic and commercial properties are eligible to apply for the grant.

All applicants must have completed the Application Form and Checklist submitted along with supporting documentation by hardcopy or electronic copy to HSF@offalycoco.ie or BHIS@offalycoco.ie by 4pm, Friday 17th of January 2025.

Please note late applications will not be accepted.

Applicants can only avail of funding under one of the following schemes, the Historic Structures Fund, Historic Thatched Buildings Stream and the Built Heritage Investment Scheme in the same calendar year.
