Radiation Monitoring:

One of the Central Pillars of Civil Defence since the establishment in 1951, has been radiation monitoring, In 2015, the Department of Defence and the Envoirnment Protection agency, consolidated the role of Civil Defence to the measurement of background gamma radiatioin and the sampling of soil and grass to suppllement the automatic recording stations located throughout the State.

This Annual mobilisation exercise in conjunction with the Envoirnmental Protection Agency allows the Civil Defence units record the information and initially the Information and readings are sent using the Civil Defence Tetra Network which also tests our Communications Network on the day of the Exercise.

All of the Soil and grass samples are collected regionally by Civil Defence Units and sent for further analysis at the EPA offices around the Country.
