Microchipping of Dogs

Microchipping is an effective and simple way to make sure that if your dog is separated from you then found, that can be identified and reunited with you.

If you buy, sell or keep a dog in Ireland by law you must have the dog microchipped and registered on a Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine approved register.

This regulation applies for all dogs and includes puppies .

Under the Microchipping of Dogs Regulations 2015 it has been a legal requirement to have your dogs microchipped and registered with your up-to-date contact details on one of the government approved databases.

The four approved registers/databases are:

  • Fido
  • Animark
  • Irish Kennel Club
  • The Irish Coursing Club (Micro ID)

The microchip holds a code that is unique to your dog with breed, gender and age details as well as your name , address and contact details in the event of your dog being found. It also helps identify you as the rightful owner.

Remember if you move address, change phone numbers or there is a change of ownership of a microchipped dog, then you need to update this information with whichever register/database the microchip is registered so current details are correct. This is important for dog owners in case the dog is lost and needs to be reunited with it’s owner.
