Chief Executive Anna Marie Delaney is delighted to announce that Offaly County Council is shortlisted for ‘Green Public Sector Organisation of the Year’ under this the 2024 Green Awards programme.
Ms Delaney confirmed “these Awards recognise the extraordinary contribution and commitment that organisations make towards growing a greener future in Irish business today and showcases that Offaly is leading the way for Local Authorities to work collaboratively and to provide innovative solutions to address environmental challenges.”
The Green Public Sector Organisation awards is one of 24 categories in the Green Awards 2024, which is open to councils, government departments and all sections of the public service with more than 25 full time employees who have provided a comprehensive array of green enabling services and who actively encourage businesses and consumers to become greener in outlook and practice.
Offaly County Council’s Climate Action Coordinator, John McNally, outlined “our application highlighted our achievements over the last 12 months in such areas as biodiversity enhancement, sustainable transport initiatives, waste and recycling facilities, cycling infrastructure and environmental programmes. We also included our impressive work in relation to energy efficiency, active travel, resource management, the circular economy, staff development, community outreach. Our application allows us to illustrate our vision for Offaly to be a climate resilient, biodiversity rich, environmentally sustainable and climate neutral economy.”
“As an organisation we are proud to highlight our green vision for the future using Draft Climate Action Plan 2024 -2029 as just one method to communicate our message. Offaly County Council is demonstrating exemplary behaviour in investing in and developing sustainable transport and have commenced the migration of our Corporate Fleet towards Zero Emissions and Low Carbon Emission Vehicles – further examples of our innovative vision for the future. Our Climate Action team continues to focus on awareness and education campaigns as well as providing opportunities to work collaboratively to inspire positive change within our organisation, our community and nationally, securing a sustainable future for all” added Tom Shanahan, Director of Services with Offaly County Council.
Cathaoirleach Cllr Eddie Fitzpatrick welcomes the recognition that Offaly has received to stand alongside other prominent national organisations who were also shortlisted in this category including An Post, CIÉ Group, DAA, Dublin Bus, Trinity College Dublin, Uisce Éireann and Waterways Ireland.
The winner of this award will be announced on 27th February 2024.
