Ireland 2016 is a year-long programme of activity, in which everyone is invited to participate, to commemorate the events of the 1916 Rising, to reflect on our achievements as a democratic state over the last 100 years and to look towards Ireland's future.

The Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme was launched by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny on Tuesday 31st March 2015 at Collins Barracks, Dublin. A national initiative, based within the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Ireland 2016 is the centre-piece of the Decade of Centenaries. The Programme is an invitation to all of the people on the island of Ireland, to families and people of Irish ancestry living abroad, who share our cultural identity and heritage, and all of Ireland's friends, to participate in an intensive year of remembrance of the past, of reflection on our achievements and of re-imagining our Republic for future generations.

The Offaly 2016 Commemorative Committee of Offaly County Council are building a programme of events and projects with the community which will have a local focus on remembering the past, reflecting on our achievements and imagining our future.

Cllr. Sinéad Dooley Chairperson of the 2016 Offaly Commemorative Committee and Cathaoirleach of Offaly County Council said, "This is a very significant time in our history and we are all privileged to have a role in commemorating 100 years of our nation. We all share a responsibility to do this well and to do it right. The next commemorative committee will look back at what we accomplished and how we did it, so the task in hand is important."

The Offaly 2016 Commemorative Committee are Cllr. Sinead Dooley, Cllr Brendan Killeavy, Cllr John Carroll, Cllr. Liam Quinn, Cllr. Peter Ormond, Cllr. Declan Harvey, Frank Heslin, Monica Cleary, Amanda Pedlow, Sinead O'Reilly and Mary Stuart.
